Job Description

Siebel Center for Design (SCD) is unique among design centers in the United States. Our mission: To practice, model, and teach design thinking, using human-centered design to reimagine our campus, community, and collective world. An industrious and generative team of individuals works collaboratively at SCD to advance this mission. Nestled between the Gies College of Business, the College of Applied Health Sciences, Ikenberry Commons, and the Art + Design building - with the College of Education and the UIUC athletic complexes a short distance away - Siebel Center for Design is at a crossroads on our campus and is a catalyst for and driver of multidisciplinary collaboration and study. Our 60,000 square foot facility provides space for programming, instruction, prototyping, events, meetings, and more, and serves as a human-centered design focal point bringing together people from all disciplines, cultures, and realities. Siebel Center for Design at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign (UIUC) invites applicants for Adjunct Lecturer/Instructor positions ranging from 0% affiliate through part-time (50%) appointments, based on course demand and staffing. These are non-tenure-track, renewable appointments, on a 12-month service basis. Candidates may be offered an affiliate 0% non-service appointment initially; when a teaching/project need is determined, salary and service will be commensurate with course load. The salary is $2000/credit hour for a typical 8-week and 16-week course; to be negotiated based on percentage of appointment. Typical courses run 2-3 credit hours over either 8 or 16 weeks. The individuals in these roles will deliver high-quality instruction aligned with SCD’s pedagogical framework, with the possibility of teaching courses offered in-person and/or online formats. Depending on the course, instructors may use instructional materials developed by SCD or, in certain cases, receive a syllabus and create the course content. Responsibilities include facilitating curriculum that reflects SCD’s design mindsets, assessing student performance, providing support through advising and office hours, and participating in meetings and center activities as identified by SCD’s Academic Programs team. The title of Instructor requires a Bachelor’s degree. The title of Lecturer requires a terminal degree (PhD, MFA, MDes, or equivalent). Successful candidates must have at least two (2) to five (5) years of experience applying human-centered design in academic, professional or industry settings required; and at least three (3) years of teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, with a focus on design thinking, human-centered design, or related coursework would be preferential.  Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position. To ensure full consideration, applications must be received by April 3, 2025. Early applications are strongly encouraged as interviews may take place during the application period. Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis and accepted until all positions are filled. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Apply for this position using the Apply Now button at the top or bottom of this posting. The application package should include: 1) cover letter, 2) curriculum vitae, 3) a statement of teaching goals and interests, and 4) names and contact information of three professional references (no letters), all in a single PDF file as an upload in the “CV/Resume” section. Applications not submitted through https://jobs.illinois.edu will not be considered. For further information about this specific position, please contact Dawn Creath @dcreath@illinois.edu.
